Schindler's List (1993)

By Shankar

Schindler's List released in 1993 is a drama film. The film won 7 Academy Awards and also found itself ranked 8th in the American film Institute. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is based on the novel 'Schindler's Ark' by Thomas Keneally.

Schindler's List stars Liam Neeson as Schindler, Ralph Fiennes as Schutzstaffel, and Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern Schindler's Accountant. The film is black and white, I guess it is to show the 1940s or depicting the lives of the Jews which were filled with darkness during the days of war.

The film is about a German Businessman named Oscar Schindler. The film depicts the time of war where the Jews are deprived of their properties and belongings. Schindler who was initially portrayed as a shrewd businessman, uses Jews to work in his factory. Gradually he observes their suffering in the hands of the German officials and his intentions find a deviant path. Then he bribes the German officials with whatever he has earned during the period of war just to save as many Jews as possible.

Schindler's List - A good film that is portrayed in the best way possible. My favorite quote in the film, is when Schindler says to the German officer the meaning of power:

"Justice is different than power.
Power is when we have every justification to kill...
and we don't."

One can see the directors effort to show the change in the intention of Schindler from business to saving the lives of Jews. The story is very much supported by Schindler's accountant Itzhak Stern. Actually he turns out to be the one responsible for Schindler's transformation.

During the conclusion of the film, the real Schindler's Jews are shown who are still alive. The film concludes by stating "In the memory of six million Jews murdered". Really a fantastic film. If one is able to appreciate this movie, then i believe they have good choice and taste.

The Shawshank Redemption

This movie actually changed my perspective about watching movies. According to me "The Shawshank Redemption" is one of the best movies of the early 90s. Actually this movie was released in 1994 but it so happened that i saw it just a couple of years back.

"The Shawshank Redemption" released in the year 1994,a drama film was directed by Frank Darabont who also handled the screenplay. To mention in particular the screenplay of the movie was awesome!!

The character Andy Dufresne was well played by Tim Robbins and the character Red was played my favorite actor Morgan Freeman. His narration was another spectacle of the movie. I cant really figure out what makes his narrations so unique.

I dint expect the movie to be so good at the beginning. But i was wrong, rather it turned out to be the best film that i have seen. I especially liked Morgan freeman. I am a huge fan of him.

The climax of the movie was everything. One can never expect a climax of that sort in a slow moving film. Actually I watched movie more than 10 times now just for the climax. I am to hesitant to say more about the movie because if someone hasn't seen it yet which is odd,but just in case i don't want to spoil the excitement of the movie.

The movie was nominated for 7 Oscars. Besides it also won several other awards. Definitely "The Shawshank Redemption" must have been 'a must see' film of that time and still is......
